UC Riverside Underpass Murals

On both sides of the 215/60 underpass on University Ave. (approx. 1100 University Ave., Riverside) that connects the University of California, Riverside main campus to the city of Riverside, are a series of murals.  The murals to the north illustrate scenes from the history of California and Riverside whereas those on the south highlight research and creative activities that were taking place in 2001 when the mural was painted by John Wehrle. Some restoration work was done to the murals by Shadi Matar in 2013-14. The series of murals was commissioned by the Gluck Foundation and the City of Riverside with assistance from UC Riverside and the California Department of Transportation.  More background information on the murals can be found in a Highlander article by Sandy Van.
