A new sculpture constructed of old shovels, pitchforks, horseshoes and other old garden or farm tools is now on display at the Farm House Collective (1393 University Ave, Riverside, CA).  The artist is not identified.

"Plant One on Me" Mixed Media Display at the Farm House Collective

A new mixed media display has been displayed at the Farm House Collective (1393 University Ave, Riverside, CA).  It combines a writing attached to a metal frame, plants and a roster sculpture and displays the worlds "Plant One of Me".  The artist is not identified.

Digital Art Using California Air Quality Data at the California Air Resources Board Southern Headquarters

Part of our tour of the California Air Resources Board's Research facility (4001 Iowa Ave, Riverside, CA 92507) involved seeing the art within the building.  Across from the employee entrance on the south side of the building is a painting of aspects of California air made by digitizing air monitoring data.  The work was made by Refik Anadol in 2021. More information can be found on the sign below.  Unfortunately, it was not updating and changing while we were there.  It only showed a single image.

Breathing Idioms Art at the California Air Resources Board Southern Headquarters

Just inside the main entrance of the California Air Resources Board's Southern Headquarters (4001 Iowa Ave, Riverside, CA 92507) is an air pollution poetic text entitled, "There Are Many Idioms About Breathing And Yet".  The poem and work was created by Kameelah Janan Rasheed in 2021. It is accompanied by a video.  More information about the work can be found on the sign below.

Portrait of Dr. Arie Haagen-Smit at the California Air Resources Board Southern Headquarters

I was recently able to tour the California Air Resources Board's Research facility (4001 Iowa Ave, Riverside, CA 92507).  Next to the employee entrance on the south side of the building is a portrait of Dr. Arie Haagen-Smit, a pioneer in air pollution research and the founding chairman of California Air Resources Board in 1968. As described on a CARB webpage, the portrait is a collection of many photos of the sky forming the image of Dr. Haagen-Smit. The portrait was produced by ZGF Architects specifically for CARB's Southern California Headquarters in Riverside, CA.

Oak Tree Display Recognizing the Historical Role of Native Americans in Southern California

A new art display recognizing the oak trees sacred to Southern California's Native American tribes has recently been installed in the Student Success Center at UC Riverside (900 University Ave, Riverside, CA).  The display was made from oak trees that were felled for the construction of the building.  The art display has been the focus of a recent Inside UCR News article and contains several elements.  One is a map made from oak planks with acrylic panels that illustrates the historic territory of Native American tribes in Southern California. There is also a large screen display which shows a short video providing background on the display and Native American contributions. Also as described in the article, along the top of the display is UCR’s Native American Land Acknowledgement, in which the campus recognizes its responsibility to the Cahuilla, Tongva, Luiseño, and Serrano peoples as the original and current caretakers of the land, water, and air.  Along the bottom is an apology to the oak trees that once stood there, promising that UCR will “continue to remember and honor the oak trees through the beauty they provide in this art installation.” The display was a joint effort of multiple groups within and outside of UCR. Joaquin Torango, a coordinator with Native American Student Programs, sketched out the idea for the map display, and Chagrin Valley Custom Furniture, an Ohio-based company that specializes in handcrafted furniture constructed the display. The company’s creative director, Sky Ironhorse, also worked with UCR on the display.

Farm House Collective Murals

The new Farm House Collective on University Avenue (1393 University Ave, Riverside, CA) sports two new murals, one a large, somewhat hard to read, mural on the west side which in block letters spells out the name of the collective, and another smaller one with a heart, stars and other symbols.  The artists of both are unknown.

Zacatecas Cafe Mural

The Zacatecas Cafe (3767 Iowa Ave #4549, Riverside, CA), a prominent Mexican restaurant in the Eastside and near UC Riverside, has an attractive new mural celebrating its Mexican heritage. The mural was created and painted by Robert Gomez @dytch66.  

Note: This is my 500th post since starting this blog in Jan. 2023.  I never imagined that I would find so much publicly accessible art in Riverside. I've enjoyed discovering the many murals and other works of art.

Altura Credit Union University Avenue Branch Mural

Inside the University Branch of the Altura Credit Union (1616 University Ave, Riverside, CA), there is a beautiful new mural showing views of the University of California, Riverside (UCR) with orange trees in the foreground and mountains in the background.  It was painted by Juan Navarro @luvmonsterz.  Below is one complete photo and several of sections.

Altura Credit Union University Avenue Branch ATM

In the parking lot of the University Branch of the Altura Credit Union (1616 University Ave, Riverside, CA) is a drive-through ATM which has been painted with a roaring bear head, UCR's mascot and the UC Riverside name.  It is unsigned and the artist is unknown.  

Peter J. Weber House and Art

The Peter J. Weber House, a City of Riverside Cultural Heritage Landmark, is located in the side parking lot of the Marriott Residence Inn (1510 University Ave, Riverside, CA).  It was built in stages during the depression by Peter Weber with occasional help from his brother Frank, and contains lots of artistic details and woodcarvings.  As described on the Old Riverside Foundation website, "it is known for its eclectic Depression-era design inspired by an array of architectural styles and its reliance on salvaged materials". A number of the artistic features are shown below.  The Old Riverside Foundation is in charge of the house and opens it to the public for special events.  You can also reserve a private tour at Old Riverside Foundation website.  

Fine Vine Sculpture in UC Riverside Botanic Gardens

An attractive new sculpture by local artist and UCR alumnus Frank Heyming has been installed in the UCR Botanic Gardens (1 Botanic Gardens Dr, Riverside, CA).  It is entitled "Fine Vine" and is located between the Herbal Garden and the Native American Garden on the upper developed portion of the Botanic Gardens.  An article about the sculpture and the artist can be found on the Inside UCR website. 

UCR School of Medicine Education Building 2 Sunscreens and Interior Art

 The sun screens and stairway screens on the new UC Riverside School of Medicine Education Building 2 (E Campus Dr, Riverside, CA) bear a striking resemblance to DNA and protein sequencing gels.  I am not sure if it was intentional or just fortuitous, but I find it noteworthy given the important role of genetics in modern medicine.  The screens were made by BŌK Modern.  Below are some examples of the solar and stairway screens, DNA and protein sequencing gels, and some citrus-themed artwork in the interior of the building.
