Memorial to American Indian Veterans Completed

The Memorial to American Indian Veterans has now been completed and the sculpture entitled The Gift made by sculptor A. Thomas Schomberg has been installed at the Riverside National Cemetery (22495 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside). The statue of a dignified native American wrapped in a Continental flag holding a Jefferson Medal - a token of peace and friendship between the US Government and the Indian tribes is now located at a prominent area near the Veterans Memorial Amphitheater.  More information about the statue and memorial can be found here and a series of videos about it can be found through the Schomberg studio website.  A previous post with photos of the statue before the repainting can be found here and here.

The War Dog Memorial at March Field Air Museum

The west coast War Dog Memorial is located on the north side of the Heritage Courtyard just outside the entrance of the March Field Air Museum (22550 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside, CA).  As described on the March Field Air Museum website, the memorial that symbolizes the bond and sacrifices of human-canine teams in combat. It was sculpted by Tom Schomberg who has also made several other impressive sculptures at the Riverside National Cemetery.  More information about the sculpture and the artist can be found on his website.

P-38, F4/5 Lightning Memorial for World War II

The P-38, F4/5 Lightning Memorial for World War II is located on the west side of the Heritage Courtyard just outside the entrance of the March Field Air Museum (22550 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside, CA).  The plaque notes that "this fighter aircraft fought and won in all theaters of World War II". The sculptor was Robert Henderson.

Lt. General Doolittle Bust and the Fifteenth Air Force Commemorative Wall

The Fifteenth Air Force Commemorative Wall is located on the east side of the Heritage Courtyard just outside the entrance of the March Field Air Museum (22550 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside, CA).  As described on March Air Field website, "Dedicated in 1998, the 15th Air Force Commemorative Wall at March Field Air Museum pays tribute to the courageous men and women who served in the 15th Air Force". There is a medallion surrounded by about 20 plaques as well as prominent bust of Lt. General James H. Doolittle sculpted by Don Winton. The artists involved in creating the plaques are not known.

Order of the Daedalions and Strategic Air Command Plaques

Two notable plaques are located on the east side of the Heritage Courtyard just outside the entrance of the March Field Air Museum (22550 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside, CA).  One was placed by the Order of the Daedalions, the National Fraternity of Commissioned Military Pilots, and is dedicated to those who have gone before and who placed nation above self.  It has the poem "High Flight" which was one of my father's favorites.  The other plaque represents the Strategic Air Command.  The artists are unknown.

National Distinguished Flying Cross Memorial

The National Distinguished Flying Cross Memorial is located in the Heritage Courtyard just outside the entrance of the March Field Air Museum (22550 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside, CA).  As described on one of the marble monuments, the memorial is "dedicated to all those heroic aviators who have earned the Distinguished Flying Cross by deeds performed in aerial flight, awarded or not". The artists involved in creating the memorial are unknown.

War Dog Memorial Park Silhouettes

The new War Dog Memorial Park at 16400 Barton Street in Riverside has two large enclosed areas where dogs can freely play.  The fences of each of these enclosures are decorated with silhouettes of different types of dogs.  The artists of the silhouettes are unknown.  I might mention that surrounding the enclosed play areas are approximately 8-10 tableaus briefly describing the role of dogs in the U.S. conflicts over the past 120 or so years.  

March Air Field Overpass Jet Silhouettes

In recognition of March Air Field, silhouettes of airplanes and jets are affixed to the fence on both sides of the Van Buren overpass over the Interstate 215 freeway (Van Buren Blvd. near to the March Air Base).  The jets are probably best seen from the freeway and not through the fence as are seen in the close-ups below.  The designer and artist who constructed the display are unknown.  

American Indian Veteran Memorial Statue - Repainted and Relocated

The sculpture entitled The Gift made by sculptor A. Thomas Schomberg has been relocated at the Riverside National Cemetery (22495 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside) and is waiting for the Memorial to American Indian Veterans to be completed. They continue to raise funds for the memorial. Gold Star Families Memorial Monument at the Riverside National Cemetery

The Gold Star Families Memorial Monument is located just behind the Veterans Memorial Amphitheater at the Riverside National Cemetery (22495 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside, CA). As described on a website for a similar monument, "Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments honor the families of active military members who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Made of black granite, these double-sided monuments bear the inscription, Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, a tribute to Gold Star Families and Relatives who sacrificed a Loved One for our Freedom on one side. On the opposite side of the monument are scenes etched on each of the four panels: Homeland, Family, Patriot and Sacrifice. Centering this tribute is a silhouette of a saluting service member, representing those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.'

"The Gold Star Family Memorial was created by Medal of Honor Recipient Hershel “Woody" Williams to remember those families who have made the ultimate sacrifice. To learn more about the memorial and Woody's legacy, visit the Woody Williams Foundation website."

The Homeland panel features images distinctive of the Riverside area including a raincross, a cluster of oranges and a spread of California golden poppies.  

 

Military Branch and Veterans Administration Seals on the Administration Building at Riverside National Cemetery

On the walls of south side of the Administration Building at Riverside National Cemetery (22495 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside) are located beautiful metallic seals from each branch of the U.S. military as well as the seal of the Veterans Administration.
