Peter J. Weber House and Art

The Peter J. Weber House, a City of Riverside Cultural Heritage Landmark, is located in the side parking lot of the Marriott Residence Inn (1510 University Ave, Riverside, CA).  It was built in stages during the depression by Peter Weber with occasional help from his brother Frank, and contains lots of artistic details and woodcarvings.  As described on the Old Riverside Foundation website, "it is known for its eclectic Depression-era design inspired by an array of architectural styles and its reliance on salvaged materials". A number of the artistic features are shown below.  The Old Riverside Foundation is in charge of the house and opens it to the public for special events.  You can also reserve a private tour at Old Riverside Foundation website.

Artistic Details of the Fox Theater

The Fox Theater (3801 Mission Inn Avenue, Riverside, CA) has some beautiful artistic details, both in its architecture and decorations.  The theater was designed by Los Angeles-based architects Clifford Balch and engineer Floyd E. Stanberry, and was constructed in a Spanish Colonial Revival style complimenting other buildings within the city of Riverside at that time. The theater, owned by the city, underwent extensive renovation in the early 2000s. The artist that painted the eves above the box office is unknown.  More information on the theater and its history can be found here.  These are all photos taken from the exterior.

Center for Social Justice & Civil Liberties Facade and Exterior

The Center for Social Justice & Civil Liberties (3855 Market St, Riverside, CA) exhibits a beautiful facade that features the heads of Cortez and Balboa.  The building, completed in 1926, was originally built for the Riverside Finance Company, and was purchased in the 1950s to serve as the Citrus Belt Savings and Loan Building.  The building was designed by Los Angeles-based architect Stiles O. Clements in a California Churrigueresque revival style (a type of Spanish Baroque). Riverside Community College District purchased the site in 2005 and renovated it into the current Center/Museum which opened in 2012. More information about the building can be found here
